Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Clinical Documentation

From autumn 2026, healthcare professionals in several departments across the hospitals in Helse Nord will be testing ambient scribe, a digital tool that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to assist with clinical documentation.

The tool is designed to make writing clinical notes easier and faster, allowing healthcare professionals to spend more time talking with you and providing your care.

What does this mean for you?

When the AI tool is going to be used during a consultation, your healthcare professional will inform you beforehand. You may let them know at any time if you do not want the tool to be used, or if you would like its use to stop during the consultation.

The AI tool converts what is said during the conversation between you and your healthcare professional into text. After the consultation, the tool creates a draft clinical note that is accessible only to the healthcare professional.

The healthcare professional is always responsible for the clinical note. This means they review the content, correct any errors, and add any necessary assessments before the note is approved and transferred to your medical record.

No audio recordings of the consultation are stored. The audio is processed while the conversation is taking place and is deleted continuously. It cannot be played back or retrieved later.

The text and draft clinical note are deleted from the AI tool once the final note has been transferred to the medical record, or automatically after 24 hours. The information cannot be restored once it has been deleted.

Only the final, approved clinical note is stored in your medical record. You can view the note through Helsenorge in the same way as other clinical notes.

What about your personal information?

Your personal information will be handled in a secure and responsible manner. Only information necessary for your healthcare and clinical documentation will be processed.

The duty of confidentiality applies in the same way as for any other patient care. The AI tool has been assessed and approved by Helse Nord for this use and is required to comply with information security and privacy requirements.

Information from the consultation is not used to train AI models.

Your involvement and your rights

It may feel unusual to have an AI tool used during a consultation with a healthcare professional. You are welcome to ask questions if you would like to know more about how the tool is used, how the clinical note is created, or how your information is processed.

You may decline the use of this solution during your consultation or ask for its use to be stopped. The clinical note will then be written in the usual way. This will not affect the healthcare or treatment you receive.

If you have any questions about the use of this tool or the processing of your personal information, please ask your healthcare professional.
